Iona Bonamis Talks Healthy Living and Healthy Beginnings

There is much excitement about eating and living healthy nowadays and rightly so.

We celebrate taking care of ourselves because that in turn ripples towards other people and well – the world. The good thing is becoming conscious about our choices benefits not only us.

We spoke to Iona from Healthy Beginnings, who teaches workshops on greenproofing and eco-maternity. It’s all about taking control of what you put in your body and what you surround yourself with.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a mother of a spirited two year old little boy, and I was born and raised in Vancouver. I have been working in the sustainability field for over 15 years and am passionate about empowering others to become advocates of their own health.

What does it mean to be an Eco-Maternity Consultant and Greenproofer?

As an Eco-Maternity Consultant and Greenproofer, I help new and expecting parents, and caregivers create greener and healthier homes, bodies, and environments for themselves and their children. Through one-on-one consultations and group workshops, I empower parents and caregivers to become advocates of their own health.

There is a lot of information out there warning us about various health hazards and harmful chemicals, and it can be overwhelming and even paralyzing to think about it. I help people overcome this fear by breaking down the information and focusing in on what’s important to them. We concentrate on what they can easily and realistically incorporate into their daily lives, and what is really important to them.

Tell us about the types of workshops you host.

I offer a free introductory workshop, as well as more in-depth workshops that cover an array of topics, ranging from food and nutrition to how to read the labels of skincare products and cleaning products, to designing green nurseries, to tips and advice on stress management and how to incorporate physical activity into your busy schedules. Some workshops also include live demos of my favourite recipes.

These workshops are typically open to everyone, but private workshops can also be arranged.

What do you love about teaching?

I love seeing people’s faces when I share my tips and tricks with them and a light bulb goes off in their mind as they realize how easy it is to start taking action to have a healthier home or workplace. And it’s true what they say – teaching is the best way to learn. My clients and workshop participants can be great resources of new information, and my perpetual search for new and improved solutions means that I never stop learning.

How can greenproofing help contribute to a more environmentally-friendly home?

Greenproofing improves the health of a family and reduces their eco-footprint. The two almost always go together, hand-in-hand. When we do something that’s better for the environment, the chances are that it also benefits our health. We look at everything from easy ways to improve indoor air quality to healthier and more sustainable food options, to body care and cleaning products that are safe for both human AND environmental health, to more sustainable and furniture and building materials that also contain fewer toxins.

What inspires you?

I am deeply motivated by the desire to start our next generation off on the right foot, and to give them the tools they need to continue living healthy and sustainably. We only have one life and one earth, and we need to make choices that allow our bodies and the earth to be the resilient beings that they are.
